In the whirlwind of daily life, finding moments of calm can feel like chasing a distant dream. I’ve often found myself tangled in stress, my mind racing and my body tense. That’s when I turned to yoga, not just any yoga, but a gentle, nurturing practice designed specifically for easing stress and restoring balance. This journey has been magical and transformative. This practice changed my life in the most positive way which is why I love sharing it.
Embracing Yoga for Stress Relief: A Personal Journey
When I first stepped onto the yoga mat, I was skeptical. Could slow stretches and mindful breathing really help with the anxiety and overwhelm I felt? The answer surprised me. Yoga became my sanctuary—a space where I could breathe deeply, listen to my body, and let go of the tension that had built up over time.
What I love most about yoga for stress relief is its accessibility. You don’t need to be flexible or experienced. It’s about tuning into your body’s needs and honoring them with kindness. For example, I often start my practice with gentle breathing exercises like Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing), which instantly calms my nervous system. Then, I flow into poses like Child’s Pose and Cat-Cow, which stretch and soothe my spine, releasing physical and emotional tightness.
If you’re new to this, try setting aside just 10 minutes a day. Find a quiet corner, roll out your mat, and focus on your breath. You might be surprised how quickly your mind begins to settle.

The Science Behind Yoga and Stress Relief
Yoga’s power to reduce stress isn’t just anecdotal—it’s backed by science. When we practice yoga, our bodies release endorphins, the natural “feel-good” chemicals. At the same time, yoga lowers cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress. This dual effect helps us feel more relaxed and balanced.
Breathing techniques, or pranayama, play a crucial role here. Slow, deep breaths activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which calms the body’s fight-or-flight response. This is why even a few minutes of mindful breathing can make a big difference during a hectic day.
In addition, yoga encourages mindfulness, the practice of being fully present. This mental focus helps break the cycle of worry and rumination that often fuels stress. Personally, I find that after a yoga session, my mind feels clearer, and I’m better equipped to handle challenges with a calm, centered attitude.
What type of yoga is best for stress relief?
Not all yoga styles are created equal when it comes to stress relief. Some are more vigorous and energizing, while others are slow and restorative. For calming the mind and soothing the body, I recommend exploring these styles:
Hatha Yoga: This is a gentle introduction to basic postures and breathing techniques. It’s perfect for beginners and those seeking a slower pace.
Yin Yoga: Focused on long-held, passive stretches, Yin helps release deep tension in connective tissues and promotes relaxation.
Restorative Yoga: Using props like bolsters and blankets, this style supports the body fully, encouraging deep rest and healing.
Vinyasa Flow (slow-paced): While often dynamic, a slow and mindful Vinyasa practice can also be calming, especially when paired with breath awareness.
For my own at home practice, my favorite practice to come to is Restorative. The gentle support and quiet atmosphere help me quiet down my very ever so going mind and turn inward, connecting with the equanimity that flows within. I am the go, go type of person, Restorative helps me find balance and keep anxiety at bay.
Creating Your Own Stress Relief Yoga Routine
Building a personal yoga practice for stress relief doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simple routine you can try at home to nurture your mind and body:
Begin with the Breath: The Breath is your "Super Power". It's this amazing tool that you carry with you at all times, if you are taking deep breaths the body will automatically shift into a calmer space. Sit comfortably and practice 5 minutes of deep, slow breathing. Try inhaling for a count of 4, holding for 4,(no breath retention for anyone expecting Moms, uncontrolled high blood pressure or asthma) and exhaling for 6.
Gentle Warm-Up: Move through Cat-Cow stretches to awaken your spine and release tension.
Soothing Poses: Hold Child’s Pose for 2-3 minutes, focusing on your breath. Feel the forehead on the floor. Can you release tension in your jaw muscles, neck, shoulders and release any gripping int the hips?
Follow with gentle twists and seated forward folds.
Mindful Movement: Flow slowly through a few rounds of Sun Salutations, moving with your breath.
Rest and Reflect: End with Savasana (Corpse Pose), lying still and allowing your body to absorb the benefits.
Remember, the key is to listen to your body. If a shape feels uncomfortable, modify it or skip it. The goal is relaxation, not perfection. If the entire Flow is too much pick one thing to do at a time. Savasana is always a great place to start.

Integrating Yoga into a Holistic Lifestyle
Yoga for stress relief is just one piece of a larger puzzle when it comes to holistic well-being. Over time, I’ve learned that combining yoga with other mindful practices deepens its benefits. Here are some ways to weave yoga into a balanced lifestyle:
Mindful Eating: Nourish your body with wholesome foods that support energy and calm.
Regular Movement: Complement yoga with gentle walks or tai chi to keep your body active.
Adequate Sleep: Prioritize rest to allow your mind and body to recover.
Meditation and Reiki: Explore meditation or energy healing sessions to enhance your spiritual connection.
At Be Well Yoga & Reiki, these practices come together beautifully. Whether you join a class in Manhattan or Long Island, or attend a corporate event or retreat, you’ll find a supportive community dedicated to easing stress and fostering balance.
Finding Peace in the Present Moment
One of the most profound gifts yoga has given me is the ability to find peace right here, right now. Stress often pulls us into worries about the future or regrets about the past. Yoga gently invites us back to the present moment, where true calm resides.
If you ever feel overwhelmed, try this simple practice: close your eyes, take three deep breaths, and notice the sensations in your body. Feel your feet on the ground, your breath moving in and out. This small pause can be a powerful reset.
Remember, your journey with yoga is uniquely yours. Be patient and compassionate with yourself as you explore this path. With time, you’ll discover that stress relief yoga is not just a practice on the mat—it’s a way of living with more ease, grace, and balance.
