About the event
Understanding, Preventing and Managing Vicarious Trauma through Somatic Therapy
Vicarious trauma (VT) refers to the emotional and psychological impact that individuals experience when they are exposed to the traumatic experiences of others. This phenomenon is particularly prevalent among professionals in fields such as healthcare, social work, law enforcement, and counseling, where they frequently encounter the suffering and trauma of others.
Key Concepts of Vicarious Trauma
Definition: Vicarious trauma occurs when a person internalizes the trauma narratives of others, leading to changes in their worldview, beliefs, and emotional well-being.
Symptoms: Symptoms may include anxiety, depression, emotional numbing, intrusive thoughts, and a sense of helplessness.
Difference from Burnout: While burnout is primarily related to work-related stress and exhaustion, vicarious trauma is specifically linked to the emotional impact of exposure to others' trauma.
